Every year 3,000,000 girls, most under 15 years of age, undergo #FGM. This is unacceptable. On International day of zero tolerance of FGM, ALDE calls for an end to female genital mutilation (FGM) all over the world. ALDE MEP Anthonya Parvanova is the author of the Parliament report on Violence against Women and FGM that takes full account of FGM as a form of gender-based violence. FGM is thought to affect 500 000 in the EU. It is recognised internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. It is one of the cruellest forms of violence against women. The practice has severe short- and long-term physical and psychological consequences for the victims. The European Parliament calls on the European Commission to propose, without delay, an overall and comprehensive strategy and action plan on violence against women and FGM, addressing issues such as prevention and protection.
